Let’s face it: budgeting can sometimes feel like homework. But what if we turned saving money into a game?
Welcome to the “Fiver-Free” Weekend Challenge! The goal is simple: pause your usual weekend spending habits, find creative ways to live for free, and see how many “fivers” (£5 notes) you can save to jumpstart your savings goals.
Whether you want to build an emergency fund, pay off a stubborn bill, or just prove to yourself that a zero-spend weekend can actually be fun, this challenge is for you and can be enjoyable at the same time.
The Golden Rules of the “Fiver-Free” Weekend Challenge
- 1. Freeze the Plastic (and the Cash)
- From 6:00 PM on Friday until 6:00 AM on Monday, all non-essential spending is locked down.
- No quick trips to the corner shop, no takeaway apps, and no online browsing.
- 2. Declare Your “Allowed” Essentials
- Before the weekend starts, decide what is strictly allowed. Essential grocery top-ups (like a pint of milk for your morning tea) or pre-planned bus fares are fine. Everything else is paused!
- 3. Complete One “Pantry Raid” Meal
- Instead of buying a standard weekend meal or ordering a takeaway, you must cook at least one meal using only items you already have inside your cupboards, fridge, or freezer. Get creative!
- 4. Find the “Freebie” Entertainment
- You cannot spend money to have fun this weekend. Instead, you must tick off at least two free activities. Need ideas?
- Go for a “Welly Walk” in a local park.
- Visit a local museum or library (most are free in the UK!).
- Have a dedicated board game or movie night using streaming services you already pay for.
- Spend an hour decluttering one cupboard to see if you have items to sell on Vinted or Facebook Marketplace.
- 5. Track and Stash Your Fivers
- Every time you actively say “no” to a purchase you would normally make, calculate how much you saved.
- Avoided a £5 supermarket meal deal? That’s one fiver saved!
- Skipped a £15 takeaway? That’s three fivers saved!
- At the end of the weekend, add up your total savings and transfer that exact amount straight into your savings pot.
🎨 How to Make Your Visual Tracker
Don’t just track your savings in your head—make it visual! Seeing your progress grow on paper keeps you motivated when you’re tempted to spend.
Here is how to set up your tracker before the weekend starts:
- Grab a blank piece of paper and a pen.
- Draw a grid of squares (aim for a grid of 10 or 20 boxes to start).
- Inside each box, draw a small “£5” sign to turn them into your digital fivers.
- Grab your favourite colouring pencils or highlighters and leave them next to your sheet.
How to use it:
Every single time you actively choose to skip a purchase over the weekend, figure out how many fivers you just saved.
- Skipped a £5 coffee and cake trip? Color in 1 fiver!
- Swapped a £10 cinema ticket for a free movie night at home? Color in 2 fivers!
- Put down a £20 pair of shoes while browsing online? Color in 4 fivers!
By Sunday night, your goal is to have as many boxes colored in as possible. Stick it on your fridge so you can see your visual win every time you open the kitchen door!
The “Pantry Raid” Trick: Free UK Ingredient Swaps
When you are completing your mandatory rule number three (the pantry raid), do not panic if you are missing an ingredient. Buying a whole jar of something for one meal defeats the purpose of a zero-spend weekend. Instead, get creative with simple household swaps.
If a recipe calls for buttermilk, add a squeeze of lemon juice to standard milk. Missing eggs for a baking challenge? A mashed banana or a dollop of applesauce works beautifully as a binder. If a recipe requires specific spices like cumin or coriander, substitute them with a generic mild curry powder from your cupboard. Turning cooking into a puzzle is half the fun, and you will save a fiver by avoiding a last-minute trip to the supermarket corner shop.
Monday Morning Momentum: What to Do Next
Once 6:00 AM on Monday rolls around, the challenge is officially over, but your savings momentum shouldn’t stop there. Take the total amount of cash you saved from your visual tracker and immediately transfer it into a dedicated savings pot. Doing this first thing on Monday morning creates a psychological win that sets the tone for your entire week.
If you manage to complete this challenge just once a month, you will easily stash away an extra £60 to £100 over the year—completely pain-free.
Every single fiver you actively choose to protect today builds a stronger financial safety net for your household’s future tomorrow.
Choose Your Difficulty Level
- Bronze Level: Spend money only on pre-planned essentials.
- Silver Level: Absolute zero spend, but you can use pre-bought treats you already have at home.
- Gold Level: Absolute zero spend, plus you must find at least one item in your house to list for sale online to make money!
