How I Started My Low Income Savings Journey (Real UK Budget Breakdown)
This is the first month of my £1,000 savings challenge UK , where I’m trying to save £1,000 in 12 months on a low income.
I started from £0 savings, and this month is all about setting the foundation, tracking spending, and building simple habits that actually work in real real life.
No perfect system. No financial advice from experts. Just real-life budgeting in the UK cost of living in 2026.
What I Focused on in Month 1
1. Tracking Every Expense
The first thing I did was start tracking everything:
- Food shopping
- Transport
- Small daily spending (coffee, snacks, etc.)
This alone showed me where money was disappearing.
2. Setting a Weekly Budget
Instead of thinking monthly, I switched to weekly:
- Weekly target: £19 savings
- Weekly spending limit:
3. Cutting Small Waste Spending
I didn’t cut everything – just waste spending like:
- Random snack purchases
- Unplanned takeaway food
- Small impulse buys
These were adding up more than expected.
